One reserve in particular, Carmelita, Guatemala – on the Maya Biosphere Reserve – has been cited as the “best model (of responsible forest management) found in Latin America.

Working under strict  FSC guidelines, the people of this village have transformed logging as well as their lives: deforestation is reduced, watersheds and wetland areas are protected and the locals have a steady income. Villages now have hope – and running water. Thanks to recently opened sawmills, eight reserve communities in Central America are looking forward to the possibility of electricity and other improvements.
